CloserStill Media – Human Healthcare Portfolio
2022 was a significant year for CloserStill Media Healthcare division.
The portfolio consists of 20+ events, including primary and secondary care shows, dentistry and pharmacy events, therapy and residential care shows, and much more.
The NHS are the prime audience for these events, but the sector was hugely impacted by the pandemic. Pressures such as backlog of surgeries and appointments, impact on workforce, industrial action by NHS staff, and budget restrictions, all contributed to the many challenges the team faced when attracting key delegates to their events.
Additionally, CloserStill faced their own staffing issues, following huge employee losses as a result of pandemic.
Despite the challenges, CSM Healthcare Portfolio successfully delivered 22 events, including four new launches. The portfolio welcomed 850 exhibitors and 58k unique delegates. Furthermore, the team managed to deliver an average audience growth of 39%, and average 44% growth in show size.
A clear vision, strategy and plan of action were imperative in achieving the ambitious goals, but none of the results would have been possible without the sheer grit, determination and seamless collaboration of the CSM Healthcare teams, which is why they deserve to win the Best Event Team Award.

edie, edie 23
“The edie team were simply amazing at facilitating an exchange of ideas around sustainability that will echo for months and ultimately will make a positive difference – bravo.” Jason Danciger, Managing Director, Hana Group
This is the story of how a small-but-mighty team came together – for the first time – to transform a dwindling sustainability conference into a truly industry-leading, mission-driven experience; edie’s most successful event by every metric, and one which has tangibly made a real difference to the world.
Inspired by Netflix’s “radical candour” culture of open feedback, the new team was aligned around a common goal. We ditched egos, shared new ideas to meet the goals, and openly challenged each other – some of the most effective sales tactics came from the producer, some of the most innovative content formats came from editorial.
Everything changed within 6 months: Name, ticketing, content formats, features and partnerships. But our proudest team creation was our Mission Statement which set public commitments across D&I, greenwashing and action-oriented content.
We’re proud to have achieved record-breaking growth in revenue and a NPS of +48, with 93% of delegates stating it will have a positive impact on their sustainability strategy.

The CrimeCon UK event team have come to expect the unexpected, but nothing could prepare them for CrimeCon UK 2022, when a fire at the venue halfway through the conference threw the schedule out of the window. From taking to the streets of London to organise our 800 guests to finding alternative venues and hosting a VIP dinner by torchlight – it was thanks to the incredible events team that the event was, regardless of the challenges, a roaring success. Event of the Year (up to 1000 attendees)
CTL Communications, An Iconic Launch
We were invited to deliver a launch event for the first treatment for an ultra-rare disease. Our mission was to deliver a 2-day live event to both in-person and virtual attendees, creating a truly memorable experience.
An iconic location goes hand-in-hand with an iconic event. Iceland, a country renowned for tectonic plates, energy and beauty, was selected as the host country. It served as the perfect representation of the brand – a force of nature providing hope for patients with a power beyond anything they had ever imagined.
But from cancelled site visit flights due to a sudden snowstorm, an earthquake forcing the team to halt the rigging of AV equipment within a lava tunnel, GPS magnetic fields wreaking havoc with kit, power surges shutting down multiple media servers, flooding and multiple electric shocks for the crew, there were numerous challenges to event delivery.
Trailblazers served as the creative thread, bringing to life this ground-breaking product as a celebration of new hope, and a unique tie-in for the brand teams leading the way to forging a flare-free future for patients. Emotive sessions, an immersive patient experience, a drone show and more, delivered an impactful launch event.
edie, edie 23
“’Inspirational’ doesn’t seem to do this event justice. I’ve never seen so much passion for climate and nature leadership in one place. edie 23 was the beginning of something big; a coming together of people with both power and passion to change the future of planetary health through the way we do business.”
This is the story of a transformation of a flatlining sustainability conference into a truly industry-leading, mission-driven climate action event; edie’s most successful event by every metric, and one which has made a real difference to the world.
With ambitious growth goals, we levelled up everything: a new name and strapline; new ticketing structure; new content streams; new session formats; new interactive features; new industry partnerships forged; a new event app launched; QR Coded content incorporated; and new pre- and post-event content packs developed.
The most important development was our Mission Statement, setting out commitments across D&I, greenwashing and action-oriented content, including a minimum of 50% women 20% people of colour on stage, and strictly no greenwashing.
After a monumental team effort, we’re proud to have achieved a NPS of +48, with 93% of delegates stating edie 23 will have a positive impact on their sustainability strategy.
emap Publishing, Student Nursing Times Awards 2022
Student Nursing Times Awards is the biggest celebration of learners and educators in nursing and midwifery. 2022’s event was record-breaking in its engagement with audience and delivered many innovations in entry process, format, sustainability, marketing of the event, and the after-party. Achieving a 71% increase in revenue year on year and 900 people in the room representing a 32% increase versus budget, the team worked year-round to help the event bounce back from the pandemic. With an 80% reduction in printed materials, low-carbon-impact menus and ISO-accredited suppliers the event’s carbon footprint was dramatically reduced. 43% of attendees engaged with the mobile app, over 100 judges participated in the process, and an NPS score of +72 was returned by over 170 surveyed attendees. Responding to critical feedback from stakeholders in 2021, the event format introduced comedy breaks in the ceremony, a brand-new thrust staging layout, a themed and longer after party, shorter headline speeches, an increased focus on wellbeing and mental health, a celebrity voiceover, mid-dinner tableside broadcast-style interviews, voiceover descriptions of winning entries, and a comedy sketch introduction. The event was a huge success, exceeding expectations from even the most optimistic stakeholders, reflected in even better 2023 results so far.
emap Publishing, New Civil Engineer 50th anniversary
New Civil Engineer (NCE) is the official membership magazine of the Institution of Civil Engineers, which goes out to 50,000 people around the world, and it was celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2022. It would have been easy to just do a supplement, but the team put on an outstanding event that brought all of that work to life and stimulated real engagement with NCE’s audience.
The event was lauded by both guests and sponsor and the imaginative displays that visually demonstrated NCE’s role in the industry over the last 50 years played a critical role at everyone of NCE’s events in 2022.
Not only was the event a success in terms of market satisfaction – and that wasn’t just down to the cupcakes – it was a huge financial success for the brand too.

Ascend Global Media, Women of Silicon Roundabout
Ascend Global Media’s flagship event, Women of Silicon Roundabout in London, has become the cornerstone of the global gender diversity movement in tech.
The theme for the 2022 Women of Silicon Roundabout event was Resilience: how women can stand tall in the face of the obstacles that still exist in the tech world – and overcome them. The keynote topics included the power of storytelling, the importance of authenticity, and how to go about building a personal brand.
The event included masterclasses, workshops and talks from inspirational speakers that connect women throughout the global tech ecosystem with one another. Speakers included C-suite executives from the BBC, Natwest, IBM, and other major companies worldwide.
The heart of the event was community building: developing a tight-knit network of women in technology who can help each other, as well as the girls and young women entering tech, to chart a bold career course and achieve their goals, whatever they might be.
BeSure Events, WellFest
The NHS trust wanted to recognise the incredible efforts that had gone into caring for patients over the pandemic and beyond, by creating something that would put their people at the centre. The original idea was based around an online single event, but slowly developed into to an all singing, all dancing three-day wellbeing and inclusion summer festival, WellFest.
The main aim of WellFest was to help improve and support the NHS colleagues’ social, physical, and mental wellbeing. Keeping that in mind, three different areas were created to ensure staff were provided with an all-rounded experience and able to relax, recharge and reconnect.
Over the three live days, 1500 colleagues from the 5 Hampshire and Isle of Wight NHS trusts attended the festival, participating in 26 different activities options and attending talks from 12 different speakers. WellFest was the first of its kind but hopes to not be the last and leaves a legacy for all other NHS trusts to offer a platform to relax, recharge and reconnect with their colleagues and most importantly themselves.

Sustainability Award
BDC London – A Platform for Good
Sustainability at the BDC goes back to 1989 when the company established its charitable arm, the Morris Charitable Trust, to support those facing hardship or working to improve health, education and the quality of life in the local community in which it operates. Over the past thirty-seven years since being founded, the BDC’s activities in relation to sustainability have evolved into an integral part of its day-to-day operations, on a continued journey of serving its community, prioritising its people and delivering on commitments to improving its environmental impact.
Last year the BDC passed twelve years as a carbon neutral venue, releasing its Net-Zero target of before 2030 and sharing learnings with the wider industry and external stakeholders. BDC also set out to become a B Corp, presenting to the local business improvement district, Angel.London, on the benefits of doing so, which resulted in a collaborative network of SMEs in the Borough taking on the challenge themselves.
The business has reduced its carbon footprint by 66.7% between 2018/19 and 2021/22 and is implementing the support needed for events to be able to tackle their own emissions, through measurements to benchmark, clearer communications and working on a venue specific guide.
IET London: Savoy Place – Ongoing Sustainability Improvement
IET London: Savoy Place is committed to sustainability and reducing its environmental impact. From 100% renewable electricity to our zero-waste policy and sustainable catering options, we strive to provide the best events not just for our clients, but for the environment too.
In 2022, we became one of only a handful of venues to secure the prestigious Greengage ECOsmart Platinum Award. The award reflects the extensive measures we have taken to fully embrace environmental sustainability. We have also achieved the Silver Investors in the Environment Accreditation, and are aiming to achieve ‘Green’ status by 2025.
The building is equipped with energy-efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems, and smart building management systems to ensure energy is used efficiently. Solar panels have been installed on the roof to generate renewable energy, and rainwater harvesting is in place to reduce water consumption. And when it comes to catering, we source sustainable and ethically produced products, and prioritise local suppliers where possible to reduce carbon footprint.
Staff are continually educated in energy-saving best practices. There’s no on-site parking, and people are encouraged to travel by public transport to events, cutting out a key source of emissions entirely.
Informa Group – Informa Event Sustainability ‘The Fundamentals’
Nearly 400 events in Informa now measure and improve their ESG scores through Informa’s innovative, open-sourced Fundamentals system. It works with events to improve their sustainability across 12 key areas. That’s an improvement of nearly 400% in 4 years since launch and ongoing improvement in scores by events.
Lambeth Palace
The Lambeth Palace Estate is the home of the Archbishop of Canterbury and is the centre of the Archbishop’s Ministry. Lambeth Palace has a proud heritage of providing hospitality at all levels since 1397, from Archbishops setting up soup-kitchens at the Palace gates, bringing the Community together post wars and even entertaining royalty at garden parties.
Lambeth Palace has a well-established history of sustainable and environmental practice and leads venues across the United Kingdom and internationally in proving that historic venues do not have to choose between preservation of heritage and sustainability. Palace Public Occasions, the trading arm of the Church Commissioners (Charity number 1140097), was set up in 2011 as a not for profit to allow the Palace to trade commercially. We host approximately 650 events per year, and they are a mix of internal, corporate, charity and community.
Ethical and sustainable practices have always been rooted into our ethos over 900 years of existence. We are proud to be leaders for the historic building community in how we operate with sustainability at our heart. Our practices are guided by our central procurement department, our ethics department and also our onsite sustainability working group.

Sustainability is at the very core of the venue’s operation and day-to-day business, and sustainability strategies are an integral part of the venue’s design. In fact, The Spine has been designed to be one of the healthiest buildings in the world: in 2022, it achieved BREEAM Outstanding and it is on track to achieve WELL Platinum.
Its impressive internal biophilic sky garden reconnects people with nature and creates a healthier and happier environment that has been proven to reduce stress. Spaces at The Spine supports 10 concepts of the WELL Standard (Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community), making it a dynamic, forward-thinking venue of the future and a beacon of excellence in Liverpool.
Sustainability at Hyve’s Global Natural Resources Events
Since Covid, Hyve’s Global Natural Resources Events Operations Team have put sustainability at the core of everything they do. This has resulted in their feature areas being totally transformed with their look and feel whilst using sustainable South African pine which is fast growing and is the only mainstream construction material that can claim to be almost infinitely renewable. The design means they can be flat packed with a lower carbon footprint in transporting and packaging. The versality of design has also allowed elements to be mix and matched across their past three shows meaning no waste or new construction materials being used. Other measures have seen over 10,000 sponsored water bottles not going to landfill, delegate bags created from PET giving an extra life to 147,000 plastic bottles, donations to local schools for unwanted materials, turning recycled paper into seeds and vegetables to feed 1,500 children and Sales Lounges being converted to classrooms for disadvantaged children in local Townships to name just a few!
The Venues Collection: Championing the industry on food and food waste
As a UK venue group, we are committed to educating and enabling our clients to make more informed choices and to make holding sustainable events as easy as possible. We were the first venue chain to introduce carbon labelling on menus so that organisers could make wise choices, and we are on track for this initiative alone to stop 60,000kg of CO2e from being created per year.
We believe that lots of small initiatives add up and that everything we do enables event organisers to run more sustainable events. The initiatives we have implemented include empowering and inspiring our chefs to get creative with food waste, launching our Meetings for Change DDR and 24hour rate, ensuring our menus contain at least 80% British ingredients, reducing red meat on our menus, focusing on plant forward meals and implementing CO2e reporting for each of our venues. Wyboston Lakes Resort – Room2Grow
The commitment of Wyboston Lakes Resort to sustainability has been widely recognised and accreditations include, Platinum from Greengage Eco-Smart, a Gold Award from Green Tourism and the IACC Gold Star.
These have been earned through a wide range of energy and waste reduction initiatives. So far, in only five months, 11,500 eco-conscious guests staying at Wyboston Lakes Resort have chosen to have a tree planted on the resort instead of having their room cleaned under Room2Grow, the resort’s new initiative offered to those staying more than one night.
Wyboston Lakes Resort published a 4-year Green Energy Roadmap as the foundation for its plan to become self-sufficient by producing its own green energy using the natural resources available at the Resort, which will help to achieve its 2040 Net Zero Carbon Emissions target. The total investment in the development is likely to be more than £5m.
Zero waste was sent to landfill since 2015 and the aim to ensure that no food waste goes off-site. All electricity used on the site is generated from renewable energy sources, saving more than 1,300 tonnes of Co2 emissions.
